Community Survey Findings

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Hampstead Streets for People survey 2024. Your input has provided invaluable insights into how our streets are used and how they can be improved to better serve the community.

In our 2021 survey, local people shared their vision for Hampstead’s streets and cited traffi as the number one issue.

Our 2024 survey asked you in more detail how traffic affects you, your priorities, how you get about, what you like and dislike about our neighbourhood, and to submit detailed suggestions on how our streets can change to better serve our community.

Key Findings

The survey received over 560 responses, with 2,300 comments showing strong representation from residents across Hampstead and Frognal. While transport consultants, PJA, work on the next stage, we thought you’d like to know the key findings:

  • Traffic is the biggest concern, with 93% of respondents wanting change. The most common priorities are reducing overall traffic volumes, tackling congestion hotspots, and making streets safer.

  • Walking is the primary way people get around, but many feel that pavements are cluttered, crossings are inadequate, and illegal pavement riding by mopeds and e-scooters is a growing problem.

  • Public transport could be improved, particularly with better East-West bus connections and more reliable services to reduce car dependency.

  • Car use remains important for some, especially for disabled residents, who raised concerns about parking availability and accessibility.

  • Views on cycling and e-bikes were divided, with some calling for better infrastructure and 3% regarding this as their most important priority. Others raised safety concerns about the impact on pedestrians.

  • Hampstead’s character matters to many, with “trees” being by far the most chosen word to describe what is liked about Hampstead’s streets

These findings will help shape future transport and public space improvements in our neighbourhood. You can read the full report here.

Next Steps

PJA will now be considering the content of this report along with the responses of residents during the various public consultation meetings and other discussions.

We expect their report with their insights and recommendations to tackle these issues. They will be refined through further engagement with the local community, ward councillors, representatives from local businesses and schools, and with officers from Camden Council and Transport for London.

Thank you again for sharing your views.
